U.S. Highway 322 (Commodore Barry Bridge)

The Commodore John Barry Bridge crosses the Delaware River between Chester, Pennsylvania and Bridgeport, New Jersey. The cantilever span opened to traffic on February 1, 1974 after nearly five years of construction.2 The bridge replaced a ferry crossing between the two states for U.S. 322 upon completion.

The Commodore Barry Bridge travels 192 feet above the Delaware River shipping channel along the Pennsylvania and New Jersey state line. The $115 million span opened to traffic initially with no direction connection to Interstate 95. For a short period, traffic descending from the bridges onto the Chester city street grid at Flower Street and U.S. 13. Local opposition delayed the completion of the freeway between the bridge and Interstate 95 for two years until October of 1976.1
