U.S. Highway 1 Maine - Southbound

U.S. 1 straddles the coastal reaches of Maine northward from Kittery to Portland and again within the vicinity of Bar Harbor and Acadia. At Calais, the highway leaves the coastal reaches on a northerly trek to Houlton, Presque Isle, Caribou, and ultimately Fort Kent.

U.S. Highway 1 south
U.S. 1 enters Houlton via North Street and interchanges with Interstate 95 (Exit 302). Interstate 95 travels in an east-west fashion between Smyrna Mills and the Canadian border. Woodstock, New Brunswick lies to the east; Orono and Bangor lie southwest along the freeway. Photo taken 06/27/05.

One block east of Kendall Street is the split of U.S. 1 south from U.S. 2 east. U.S. 1 follows Court Street south to Calais Road and Hodgdon Corners. The federal highway continues though Weston, Topsfield, and Calais in extreme southeastern Maine. Photo taken 06/27/05.
U.S. 1 follows a freeway west from Bath into Brunswick. Once in Brunswick, the freeway drops and parallels the Androscoggin River. U.S. 201 & Maine 24 (Maine Street) meet U.S. 1 at downtown Brunswick. A diamond interchange joins the two roadways, but left-hand turns are prohibited. Therefore motorists bound for Maine Street south must continue along U.S. 1 south (west) to Cushing Street. Photo taken 06/28/05.
Westbound at the Maine Street off-ramp to the northbound beginning of U.S. 201 and Maine 24 north. U.S. 201 & Maine 24 span the Androscoggin River into Topsham where they split. U.S. 201 continues north parallel to Interstate 295 to Gardiner; Maine 196 ventures west from U.S. 201 to Lewiston and Auburn; Maine 24 meanwhile branches northwest to Bowdoinham and Richmond. Maine 101 travels 8.1 miles overall between U.S. 1 and the Salmon Falls River crossing into New Hampshire. The state highway is not connected with the New Hampshire 101 routing. U.S. 1 south ties into the Interstate 95 interchange complex with Maine 236 (Exit 2) just southwest of Maine 101 (Wilson Road). Direct connections exist in the form of a partial "Y" interchange from U.S. 1 south onto Interstate 95 south and Interstate 95 north onto U.S. 1 north. U.S. 1 Bypass follows a partially controlled access route into Portsmouth, New Hampshire via a two-lane lift bridge. An interchange joins the highway with Maine 236 (Harold L. The southbound mainline defaults onto the beginning of U.S. 1 Bypass south. U.S. 1 south departs via the Maine 236 (Harold L. Dow Highway) off-ramp, turns left (south) with Maine 236 over U.S. 1 Bypass to a roundabout with the U.S. 1 original mainline.
