New York 440 / West Shore Expressway

New York 440 follows the West Shore Expressway between the Outerbridge Crossing and the Clove Lakes or Staten Island Expressway (Interstate 278). The state highway joins Interstate 278 briefly before turning northward onto the Willowbrook or Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway to the Bayonne Bridge into New Jersey.

New York 440 / Outerbridge Crossing east
New Jersey 440 rises above the Arthur Kill River on the Outerbridge Crossing from Perth Amboy. The state highway freeway transitions into New York 440 at the state line midway between the Garden State and Staten Island, New York. The four-lane Outerbridge Crossing carries the highway between Perth Amboy and the West Shore Expressway. Photo taken 06/13/05.
A look at the narrow Outerbridge Crossing as New York 440 spans the Arthur Kill River. The cantilever span includes a $6 car toll for all eastward traveling vehicles. Named after the first chairman of the Port Authority, Eugenius Outerbridge, the 10,800 foot long bridge opened to traffic on June 29, 1928.1 Photos taken 06/13/05.
New York 440 drivers descend toward the Staten Island toll plaza located within the Richmond Valley community. The toll plaza resides at the base of the bridge. Photo taken 06/13/05.
The first exit of New York 440 in New York City joins the freeway with Page Avenue beyond the Outerbridge Crossing toll plaza. Page Avenue stems south from Boscombe Avenue to Amboy Road and Hylan Boulevard. Photo taken 06/13/05.
Construction of two high-speed EZ Pass lanes was underway at the time of this photograph. The EZ Pass lanes encompass the middle lanes of the Outerbridge Crossing toll barrier. A second sign otherwise directs motorists to the right for the Page Avenue off-ramp. Exit 1 leaves the freeway just beyond the toll booths onto the adjacent Boscombe Avenue. Photo taken 06/13/05.
Entering the Outerbridge Crossing toll plaza on New York 440 northbound. Exit 1 leaves just beyond the booths to the right. Photo taken 06/13/05.
New York 440 / West Shore Expressway north
Leaving the toll barrier and Page Avenue interchange on New York 440 northbound. New York 440 follows the West Shore Expressway northward from the Outerbridge Crossing to junction Interstate 278 (Staten Island Expressway). All traffic interests to the Interstate 278 Verrazano Narrows Bridge are advised to take New York 440. Photo taken 06/13/05.
Tyrellan Avenue passes over New York 440 as the freeway prepares to split with the Korean War Veterans Parkway (formerly the Richmond Parkway). All commercial trucks must remain on New York 440 north as they are restricted from using any of the New York Parkway system. The Korean War Veterans Parkway spurs northeast from New York 440 to Annadale, Greenridge, and La Tourette Park. The limited-access highway ends prematurely at Richmond Avenue, five miles southwest of its intended end at Interstate 278 (Staten Island Expressway). Photo taken 06/13/05.
A small guide sign touts the renaming of the Richmond Parkway to the Korean War Veterans Parkway. The Richmond Parkway derived its name from the county in which Staten Island resides, Richmond County. An abandoned stack interchange remains in place on Interstate 278 between Exits 12 and 13 from the planned north end of the Richmond Parkway. Photo taken 06/13/05.
A second sign advises motorists to remain on New York 440 north for the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and Brooklyn. The Korean War Veterans Parkway does not provide a limited access connection between the Outerbridge Crossing and Interstate 278. Photo taken 06/13/05.
The mainline of New York 440 defaults onto the Korean War Veterans Parkway northbound. The right-hand lanes however curve and pass over the parkway onto the West Shore Expressway northbound beginning. New York 440 travels 7.5 miles northeast to its merge with Interstate 278 (Staten Island Expressway). Photo taken 06/13/05.
Continuing northward along New York 440 (West Shore Expressway) beyond Exit 2. The right-hand lane, acquired from the Korean War Veterans Parkway southbound on-ramp, becomes exit-only for Exit 3 (Woodrow Road). A pair of frontage roads (Veterans Road) follow New York 440 northward between Exits 2 and 3. A slip ramp departs ahead onto the northbound frontage road for Clay Pit Road, Bloomingdale Road, and ultimately Woodrow Road. Photo taken 06/13/05.

Exit 9 leaves New York 440 (West Shore Expressway) northbound to meet Glen Street at Hughes Avenue. Glen Street flows northbound only from Edward Curry Avenue otherwise. Photo taken 06/13/05.
Traffic interests bound for the Bayonne Bridge and the continuation of New York 440 should use Interstate 278 east. Interstate 278 & New York 440 share pavement for approximately one mile between the West Shore Expressway and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway. Photo taken 06/13/05.
