Exit numbers remain from when New York 9A traveled the West Side Highway elevated freeway along West Street. West Street parallels the Hudson River banks between Battery Park and Henry Hudson Parkway. "Exit 4" consists of the 10th Avenue turn-off. New York 9A (West Street) southbound at the 14th Street turn-off. Signed as the way to the Meat Market, the guide sign indicates that the next departure point to the left occurs one mile to the south at Clarkson Street. Exit 3 leaves New York 9A southbound for Canal Street east to Interstate 78 west, Little Italy, and Chinatown. The westbound beginning of Interstate 78 sees ramps from Canal Street, Hudson Street, Watts Street, and Varick Street four blocks to the east of West Street. The interstate follows the Holland Tunnel into Jersey City, New Jersey where it emerges onto the one-way street couplet of 12th and 14th Streets. From there Interstate 78 travels the New Jersey Turnpike Extension west to Newark and junction Interstate 95. Photo taken 08/09/04.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 left long lasting scars to the adjacent high rises that were still visible almost three years after the event.
