New York 7
New York 7 is a vital transportation link through the Capital District. Starting out as a two lane road, it enters the area in Duanesburg, intersecting with U.S. 20 and Interstate 88. The road flows into the western Capital District city of Schenectady, where it follows Duanesburg and Curry Roads to Interstate 890, intersecting New York 158, 337 and 146 along the way. At Interstate 890, New York 7 shares pavement with the interstate, until it branches off at Exit 7, forming its own four lane at grade expressway (this section of road was anticipated for an Interstate 88 extension through Albany), intersecting New York 5 and coming to an end at Balltwon Road and Union Ave. Past this intersection, New York 7 continues on as a four lane road with a center turn lane, serving the Albany suburbs of Niskayuna and Latham. At Latham, New York 7 meets Interstate 87 and follows north with the interstate highway for one exit. At Exit 7, New York 7 splits off Interstate 87, and forms its own four lane divided highway (Also to be part of Interstate 88) to head to the eastern Capital District city of Troy, intersecting with Interstate 787 along the way. At Troy, the road narrows back to a regular four lane, and eventually back to a two lane road as it heads out of Troy and the town of Brunswick, to leave the Capital District and continue its trek to the green mountain state of Vermont.

New York 7 (Hoosick Street) ascends from the 8th Street intersection to junction New York 40 (10th Street / Oakwood Avenue). As this roadway was to be part of the Interstate 88 extension to Portsmouth, NH, the main Interstate 88 roadway would have continued through the gap you see between the two outer roadways, and would have most likely been elevated over Hoosick Street for a brief distance. New York 40 stems north from Hoosick Street to Schaghticoke Hill, Easton and Argyle east of the U.S. 4 corridor. Photo taken 06/28/05. |
