New Jersey 138 eastbound at the ghost ramp to New Jersey 18 southbound. A set of button copy signs are posted to a sign bridge at the never opened southbound on-ramp of New Jersey 18. The freeway was slated to continue another six miles south to the junction of New Jersey 34 and 35 at Brielle. From NYCRoads.com "...On May 13, 2003, the NJDOT opened a "trumpet" ramp from eastbound NJ 138 to the northbound NJ 18 Freeway, taking part of the right-of-way for the freeway extension. Three days later, state officials held a press conference with the Tri-State Transportation Campaign (an anti-highway group) to announce the use of the NJ 18 Freeway right-of-way as a four-mile-long bicycle path." The northbound beginning of New Jersey 18 underneath New Jersey 138 at Wall Township. The aforementioned trumpet ramp from New Jersey 138 east to New Jersey 18 north may have eliminated the Exit 6B u-turn cloverleaf ramp for New Jersey 138 westbound. Otherwise Exit 6C departs New Jersey 18 for Monmouth Boulevard in one quarter mile. Photo taken 12/23/01.
Northbound at Exit 8 for New Jersey 33 (Corlies Avenue) at Neptune City. A three-quarter cloverleaf interchange links the New Jersey 18 freeway with the confluence of New Jersey 18, Monmouth County 17 (Sylvania Avenue) and Brighton Avenue. New Jersey 33 travels 13.2 miles west from its beginning at Asbury Park to Freehold. Photo taken 12/23/01.
New Jersey 18 South
New Jersey 18 southbound draws to a close at the reconfigured trumpet interchange with New Jersey 138 near Belmar. New Jersey 138 constitutes a four-lane surface arterial between Interstate 195 & Garden State Parkway eastward to its end at New Jersey 35. While the freeway was planned to travel to New Jersey 34, drivers can access the roadway via the Exit 35 cloverleaf interchange of Interstate 195 westbound. The Exit 6B control city of Point Pleasant is odd in that neither Interstate 195, New Jersey 138, nor New Jersey 34 directly serve the coastal community in northeast Ocean County. New Jersey 34 however provides the first leg of the route to the town. Photo taken 12/23/01.
