U.S. 1 follows Mills and Pleasant Street west from Brunswick to a freeway connector linking the federal highway with Interstate 295 Exit 28. Traveling across the Androscoggin River on U.S. 201 & Maine 24 (Maine Street / Main Street) northbound. The river flows east from Auburn and Lewiston into Merrymeeting Bay and the Kennebec River. Maine 24 veers eastward toward Bowdoinham; U.S. 201 maintains a northward trajectory to the commercial district of Topsham, meeting Maine 196 near its interchange with Interstate 295 (Exit 31) in the process. Pleasant Street facilitates movements from U.S. 1 north (Pleasant Street) to Maine 24 (Maine Street) and U.S. 201 north. The diamond interchange between U.S. 1 and Maine Street does not allow for left-hand turns from the U.S. 1 north off-ramp to Maine 24. Therefore motorists destined for U.S. 201 & Maine 24 north to Topsham must remain on Pleasant Street beyond its partition with U.S. 1 to make the connection. Photo taken 06/28/05.
