Interstate 895 - Sheridan Expressway

Interstate 895 follows the Sheridan Expressway between Interstate 278 (Bruckner Expressway) and Interstate 95 (Cross Bronx Expressway) and East 177th Street. The freeway was planned for a longer route with an extension northward into the Bronx further. But community opposition curtailed the route and it remains as a short connector between the two main Bronx east-west freeways.

Interstate 895 North
The first northbound Interstate 895 reassurance shield is posted just after the Exit 49 ramp departure from Interstate 278 (Bruckner Expressway) eastbound. A partial "Y" interchange composes the southern terminus of the Sheridan Expressway. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Interstate 895 travels an elevated viaduct north from its split with Interstate 278 toward Westchester Avenue and the East Tremont neighborhood of the Bronx. The freeway parallels the Bronx River northward from the Bruckner Expressway to junction Interstate 95 (Cross Bronx Expressway). A truss bridge carries Westchester Avenue and a subway line of the New York Metro over the waterway in the background of this scene. Photo taken 08/29/05.
The Westchester Avenue off-ramp departs Interstate 895 northbound. Westchester Avenue spans the Bronx River between East Tremont and Soundview. The surface street is part of a longer route between Mott Haven and Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. Use the interchange for the Hunts Point Market and Industrial Park. Photo taken 08/29/05.
Interstate 895 sinks below the Westchester Avenue and Metro overpasses on the one-half mile approach to Interstate 95 (Cross-Bronx Expressway). A loop ramp departs the right-hand lane for the Cross-Bronx Expressway west to the George Washington Bridge and Trenton, New Jersey. Photo taken 08/29/05.
There is no direct connection between Interstate 895 north and Interstate 95 north; travelers should remain on Interstate 278 east to the Bruckner Interchange. However one main still access the Cross-Bronx Expressway east via 177th Street east at the Bronx River Parkway interchange. Photo taken 08/29/05.
The Sheridan Expressway sees a frontage street system within the vicinity of the Westchester Avenue interchange. Pictured here is the northbound return ramp at 172nd Street. The right-hand lane defaults onto Interstate 95 southbound ahead of Tremont and High Bridge. Interstate 895 northbound otherwise defaults onto 177th Street ahead of its intersection with the Cross-Bronx Expressway frontage street system and interchange with Bronx River Parkway. Photo taken 08/29/05.
Traffic partitions into ramps for Interstate 95 south and 177th Street east at the 174th Street over crossing. Photo taken 08/29/05.

A look at the gore point between the Interstate 95 southbound loop ramp and Interstate 895 continuation to 177th Street and Tremont Avenue. The Cross-Bronx Expressway passes overhead. Photo taken 08/29/05.
The single-lane ramp to 177th Street intersects Devoe Avenue at the freeway ending. Devoe Avenue leads north to Tremont Avenue, a through street between East Tremont, West Farms, and Westchester. Photo taken 08/29/05.
Interstate 895 northbound ends at the Devoe Avenue and 177th Street traffic light. 177th Street continues east from here two blocks to the Cross-Bronx Expressway frontage street interchange with the Bronx River Parkway. Photo taken 08/29/05.
A fairly new Interstate 95 state-named shield directs motorists on 177th Street eastbound toward the junction with Bronx River Avenue and the Cross-Bronx Expressway eastbound frontage street. Photo taken 08/29/05.
177th Street eastbound at the westbound Cross-Bronx Expressway frontage street. Interstate 95 passes overhead in the background. Motorists bound for Interstate 95 northbound merge onto the eastbound frontage street at the Bronx River Parkway. Photo taken 08/29/05.
The eastbound direction of the Cross-Bronx Expressway frontage street system includes a u-turn ramp for the westbound frontage road on-ramp to the northbound Bronx River Parkway. From there the eastbound frontage street approaches its on-ramp to Interstate 95 north, thus concluding the path for Interstate 895 northbound drivers onto the Cross-Bronx Expressway east. Photo taken 08/29/05.
Interstate 895 South
Traveling the Interstate 95 (Cross Bronx Expressway) northbound on-ramp onto Interstate 895 (Sheridan Expressway) southbound. The one-lane ramp skirts above West Farms Road before joining the ramps from East 177th Street southbound ahead. There is no direct access from Interstate 95 southbound onto the Sheridan Expressway. However traffic using the Cross Bronx Expressway westbound service road can access Interstate 895 via East 177th Street west of the Bronx River Parkway interchange. Photo taken 08/09/04.
The ramps from Interstate 95 and East 177th Street merge ahead of the East 174th Street over crossing. The surface street intersects a nearby Metro train station adjacent to Bronx River Avenue. Interstate 895 itself expands to six lanes with the advent of auxiliary lanes. Photo taken 08/09/04.
The right-hand lane becomes exit-only for the Westchester Avenue off-ramp onto Whitlock Avenue. Westchester Avenue begins at the confluence of East 150th Street and 3rd Avenue in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. Whitlock Avenue meanwhile parallels the Sheridan Expressway southward to Bruckner Boulevard and Hunts Point Avenue for the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Traffic onto Whitlock Avenue for Westchester Avenue departs Interstate 895 southbound. Westchester Avenue crosses the Bronx River east of the Sheridan Expressway into the Soundview and Parkchester sections of the Bronx. The surface street continues all the way to Pelham Bay Park and Interstate 95 Exit 8B otherwise. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Both Westchester Avenue and the Metro cross over the Sheridan Expressway in this southbound scene. Interstate 895 reduces to four overall lanes for its final approach to Interstate 278 (Bruckner Expressway) and the Triborough Bridge. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Interstate 895 southbound drivers default onto Interstate 278 (Bruckner Expressway) westbound for the Triborough Bridge, Major Deegan Expressway (Interstate 87), Manhattan, and Queens. An end shield resides on the viaduct above Bruckner Boulevard westbound before the merge onto the expressway west. Photo taken 08/09/04.
