Site Navigation Connecticut Maine Massachusetts New Hampshire New Jersey New York Pennsylvania Rhode Island Vermont     Interstate 895 - Sheridan Expressway Interstate 895 follows the Sheridan Expressway between Interstate 278 (Bruckner Expressway) and Interstate 95 (Cross Bronx Expressway) and East 177th Street. The freeway was planned for a longer route with an extension northward into the Bronx further. But community opposition curtailed the route and it remains as a short connector between the two main Bronx east-west freeways. Interstate 895 North The first northbound Interstate 895 reassurance shield is posted just after the Exit 49 ramp departure from Interstate 278 (Bruckner Expressway) eastbound. A partial "Y" interchange composes the southern terminus of the Sheridan Expressway. Photo taken 08/09/04. Interstate 895 travels an elevated viaduct north from its split with Interstate 278 toward Westchester Avenue and the East Tremont neighborhood of the Bronx. The freeway parallels the Bronx River northward from the Bruckner Expressway to junction Interstate 95 (Cross Bronx Expressway). The Westchester Avenue off-ramp departs Interstate 895 northbound. Westchester Avenue spans the Bronx River between East Tremont and Soundview. The surface street is part of a longer route between Mott Haven and Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. Use the interchange for the Hunts Point Market and Industrial Park. Photo taken 08/29/05. Interstate 895 sinks below the Westchester Avenue and Metro overpasses on the one-half mile approach to Interstate 95 (Cross-Bronx Expressway). The eastbound direction of the Cross-Bronx Expressway frontage street system includes a u-turn ramp for the westbound frontage road on-ramp to the northbound Bronx River Parkway. From there the eastbound frontage street approaches its on-ramp to Interstate 95 north, thus concluding the path for Interstate 895 northbound drivers onto the Cross-Bronx Expressway east. The one-lane ramp skirts above West Farms Road before joining the ramps from East 177th Street southbound ahead. There is no direct access from Interstate 95 southbound onto the Sheridan Expressway. However traffic using the Cross Bronx Expressway westbound service road can access Interstate 895 via East 177th Street west of the Bronx River Parkway interchange. Photo taken 08/09/04. Interstate 895 itself expands to six lanes with the advent of auxiliary lanes. Photo taken 08/09/04. The right-hand lane becomes exit-only for the Westchester Avenue off-ramp onto Whitlock Avenue. Westchester Avenue begins at the confluence of East 150th Street and 3rd Avenue in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. Whitlock Avenue meanwhile parallels the Sheridan Expressway southward to Bruckner Boulevard and Hunts Point Avenue for the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. Photo taken 08/09/04. Westchester Avenue crosses the Bronx River east of the Sheridan Expressway into the Soundview and Parkchester sections of the Bronx.
