Interstate 295
Interstate 295 constitutes the eastern "Bypass" of the city of Philadelphia between New Castle, Delaware and Trenton, New Jersey. The four to six lane freeway however mainly serves commuting interests of the eastern Philadelphia metropolitan areas in and around Camden, New Jersey. The highway parallels the New Jersey Turnpike from Deepwater north to White Horse east of Trenton. The Turnpike generally syphons most of the through traffic from both Interstates 95 and 295 for interests destined to New York City and North Jersey. However both routes are still heavily traveled for interests in and around the city of Philadelphia.
The final segment of Interstate 295 opened in 1994 between U.S. 130 & 206 and Interstate 195 at Bordentown. The six-lane freeway straddles the Delaware River and sensitive wetlands on the three mile stretch. Otherwise most of Interstate 295 was opened by the 1960s and 1970s. Various improvments are underway along the freeway east of Camden resulting in widening, reconstruction, and implementation of sound barriers. A long range project addresses the mess at the Interstate 76 & 295 confluence at Bellmawr.
Lastly upon completion of the Interstate 95 connector between the freeway and Pennsylvania Turnpike at Bristol, Pennsylvania, Interstate 295 will grow to encompass all of the Trenton belt line between the Scudders Falls Bridge and White Horse. Interstate 95 relocates onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike and New Jersey Turnpike between Bristol, Pennsylvania and Mansfield Township, New Jersey by 2010. At that time old Interstate 95 from Bristol northward to Bakersville, New Jersey becomes apart of an extended Interstate 295.
