Interstate 295 consists of both the urban loop through Portland and the former Interstate 95 mainline between Falmouth and Gardiner. In 2004 Interstate 295 saw extension northward from the Maine Turnpike Falmouth Spur over original Interstate 95 to its merge with the Maine Turnpike at Gardiner. Interstate 95 shifted westward onto the entire Maine Turnpike mainline, displacing Interstate 495 in the process. Interstate 495 now constitutes an unsigned designation along the five-mile Falmouth Spur of the Maine Turnpike between Interstates 95 and 295.
