The first in a series of sign bridges for the southern terminus of Interstate 476 (Exit 7) resides at the Stewart Avenue interchange. Interstate 476, the Mid-County Expressway, serves the western suburbs of Philadelphia and through traffic interests between the Interstate 95 and 81 corridors via the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. What's left of an original Interstate 95 southbound pull-through panel remains attached to the Stewart Avenue overpass. Until the early 1990s all guide signs posted along Interstate 95 in Delaware County were substandard at best. This is the only original sign to remain along the ten mile stretch. Interstate 95 southbound bottlenecks from eight to four lanes within the tri-level stack interchange of Interstate 476 (Exit 7). All Interstate 476 shields posted on Exit 7 overheads retain the state name. Opened fully in 1991, the Mid-County Expressway or "Blue Route" links the city of Chester with Plymouth Meeting and the Pennsylvania Turnpike system. Locals refer to Interstate 476 as the Blue Route based upon the selected alternative path during the planning stages of the Mid-County Expressway. In other words the blue route won out over two other alternatives on planning maps back in the 1960s. Photo taken 04/25/04. |

Exit 7 syphons two of the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 for the northbound beginning of Interstate 476. The interchange between the two freeways was constructed in the 1970s in anticipation of the overall route. Environmental and citizen oppositional hurdles however delayed the opening of the freeway for another 15 years. The southernmost stretch of Interstate 476 between here and MacDade Boulevard (Exit 1) opened in the late 1980s however. Photo taken 04/25/04. |

Closer look at the Exit 7 overheads at the Interstate 95 south and 476 northbound split. Notice the drastic fading of the Interstate 476 shield when compared to the above photograph. The southernmost portion of Interstate 476 entails 12 miles between Chester and Plymouth Meeting (pop. 5,511). In 1996 PennDOT extended Interstate 476 north of its end at junction Interstate 276 & Pennsylvania 9 to Scranton along the entire Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Interstate 95 southbound within the tri-level stack interchange of Interstate 476 (Exit 7). Posted here is the one-half mile overhead for Exit 6 (Chestnut Street to Pennsylvania 320 & 352) . The freeway enters the city limits of the industrial port city of Chester (pop. 36,854) here. Interstate 476 southbound traffic merges onto Interstate 95 ahead expanding the freeway from four to six lanes. Photo taken 03/23/04. |
Passing over Bullens Lane just ahead of Exit 6. The upcoming ramp ascends to Chestnut Street four blocks east of Pennsylvania 320 (Providence Avenue). Pennsylvania 352 begins at the Providence Avenue intersection with the Avenue of the States (Pennsylvania 320) over Interstate 95. Pennsylvania 320 transitions into Edgemont Avenue there and travels north to Parkside (pop. 2,267) and Brookhaven (pop. 7,985). Photo taken 03/23/04. |
Exit 6 leaves Interstate 95 southbound at the Melrose Avenue overpass. Chestnut Street crosses over the freeway one block to the west between U.S. 13 (Morton Avenue) and E. 14th Street. E. 13th Street links the off-ramp with Pennsylvania 320 (Providence Avenue). Pennsylvania 320 travels south of Interstate 95 via the Avenue of the States to U.S. 13 and from there along Madison Street to its terminus at Pennsylvania 291 (4th Street). Photo taken 03/23/04. |
There is no Exit 5 in the southbound direction and so Interstate 95 proceeds through Chester toward junction U.S. 322 east (Exit 4). The federal highway joins the freeway from the cantilever Commodore John Barry Bridge across the Delaware River. The tolled span links Chester with Bridgeport, New Jersey and junction U.S. 130. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
The Kerlin Street on-ramp (Exit 5 northbound) forms the Exit 4 collector/distributor roadway for U.S. 322 east and the Commodore Barry Bridge. A slip ramp carries Interstate 95 southbound motorists onto the adjacent roadway. Greenouts on Exit 4 overheads cover the word "Toll". The Barry Bridge along with the rest of the Delaware River crossings were switched from two way to one way westbound tolls in 1992. Photo taken 04/25/04. |
Now on the Exit 4 collector/distributor roadway, a sign bridge guides motorists toward the U.S. 322 eastbound ramp and Interstate 95 southbound & U.S. 322 westbound return ramp. Interstate 95 and U.S. 322 share one mile of pavement between the Exit 4 tri-level directional interchange and a partial "Y" interchange at Exit 3. Photo taken 04/25/04. |
Interstate 95 maintains six overall lanes on the top level of the tri-level interchange with U.S. 322. There are no off-ramps on the U.S. 322 freeway approach to the Commodore Barry Bridge eastbound. There is a partial interchange with U.S. 13 (9th Street) and Flower Street that brings traffic onto the federal highway eastbound however. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
A pair of lanes descend below Interstate 95 onto U.S. 322 eastbound and the Commodore Barry Bridge. The cantilever span opened in 1976 to replace a Delaware River ferry crossing of U.S. 322. U.S. 322 travels east from Bridgeport to Swedesboro, junction Interstate 295 & New Jersey Turnpike (Exit 2), Mullica Hill, Glassboro, and ultimately Atlantic City. Photo taken 04/25/04. |

A set of Interstate 95 south & U.S. 322 westbound reassurance shields resides ahead of the Engle Street overpass where the two highways merge. Bethel Road splits from Concord Road to pass underneath Engle Street to the right. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
One half mile sign bridge for Exits 3B/A to Highland Avenue southbound and U.S. 322 (Conchester Road) westbound. Interstate 95 maintains six overall lanes on the curve at the partial "Y" interchange with U.S. 322. Photo taken 04/25/04. |
Exit 3B for Highland Avenue is the second and last off-ramp to serve the city of Chester. The north-south surface street exists between the Delaware River and intersection of Bethel Road and Green Street nearby. U.S. 322 westbound meanwhile constitutes a busy arterial between Interstate 95 and junction U.S. 1 and 202 at Concordville. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
Interstate 95 south & U.S. 322 westbound at the Highland Avenue overpass. Exits 3B and 3A depart in close proximity within the next 300 feet of the freeway. Utilize Highland Avenue southbound to reach the community of Linwood (pop. 3,404) and Community Hospital. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
A Clearview font sign for Exit 3B omits the lettered suffix of the Highland Avenue loop ramp. Highland Avenue becomes part of U.S. 13 between W. 9th Street and W. 4th Street. The surface street intersects Pennsylvania 291 (W. 2nd Street) four blocks south of there. Photo taken 04/25/04. |
The U.S. 322 westbound departure from Interstate 95 occurs at Exit 3A. The federal highway joins U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) in seven miles and U.S. 202 (Wilmington Pike) in eight miles. From there U.S. 202 & 322 overlap northward to the Chester County seat of West Chester (pop. 17,873). U.S. 1 continues westward from there to Chadds Ford and Kennett Square (pop. 5,273). Photo taken 04/25/04. |

Forthcoming are interchanges for Pennsylvania 452 (Market Street) and Chichester Avenue serving the boroughs of Boothwyn (pop. 5,051), Marcus Hook (pop. 2,314), and Trainer (pop. 1,854). The northern terminal of Interstate 495 resides just across the Delaware state line. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
Exit 2 composes a partial-cloverleaf interchange with Pennsylvania 452 (Market Street) at Boothwyn. The north-south state highway begins nearby at U.S. 13 (10th Street) in downtown Marcus Hook. From there Pennsylvania 452 travels northward to Chichester Avenue, Interstate 95, U.S. 322 (Conchester Road) to Lima (pop. 3,257) and junction U.S. 1 & Pennsylvania 352. Photo taken 04/24/04. |

Diagrammatical overhead for the Interstate 95 & 495 southbound split at Delaware's Exit 11. Interstate 495 provides an 11-mile six-lane bypass of the city of Wilmington along the Delaware River. The north-south freeway also entails a 65 mph speed limit and is the recommended through route for points south to Baltimore. Crossing over Interstate 95 ahead is Blueball Avenue. Photo taken 08/04/04. |
A second diagrammatical sign bridge for the Exit 11 partition of Interstate 495 south from Interstate 95 south. Amendments to the original signage here includes placards of Through Traffic and Local Traffic and a greenout for "City/Port of" Wilmington. These changes were made in conjunction with Delaware signage alternations in the 1990s and 2000 to move more of the through traffic away from downtown Wilmington and Interstate 95. The City/Port of greenout relates to the 2000 closure of Interstate 95 for major reconstruction. All of the placards are no longer needed now that construction is complete. Photo taken 08/04/04. |
