Cross-Bronx Expressway / Bruckner Expressway

Interstate 95 South
Interstate 95 (Bruckner Expressway) southbound at the Exit 8B loop ramp onto Pelham Parkway eastbound. Pelham Parkway transitions into Shore Road as it traverses Pelham Bay Park and the Hutchinson River. City Island Road heads east from Shore Road to Orchard Beach and the New York City community of City Island. Exit 8A meanwhile forms the southbound beginning of the Bruckner Expressway frontage street system with connections to the westbound beginning of Westchester Avenue. Photo taken 08/29/05.
Interstate 95 enters a more urban setting as the Bruckner Expressway sinks below grade. Attached to the Wilkinson Avenue over crossing is a button copy diagrammatical overhead outlining the ramp partitions for Interstate 695 (Throgs Neck Expressway) south and East Tremont Avenue. The sign refers to the Interstate 695 connection to Interstate 295 with an erroneous "to" banner placed above the Interstate 695 shield. Interstate 695 at one point was designated "Interstate 295 Spur". That designation became Interstate 695 by 1986. The Throgs Neck Expressway otherwise provides a direct link to the Interstate 295 Throgs Neck Bridge for Queens and Long Island. Exit numbers here reflect the mileage to the New Jersey state line at the Hudson River. Photo taken 08/29/05.
Road construction slows the pace of traffic to a crawl on the one half mile approach to the Interstate 95 and 695 southbound split. New reflective signs reflect Interstate 695 correctly. The Throgs Neck Expressway includes an off-ramp to Randall Avenue for the Schuylerville community ahead of its merge with Interstate 295. Interstate 295 continues the Throgs Neck Expressway southeast to the Throgs Neck suspension Bridge. Photo taken 08/29/05.
An original button copy sign remains in use at the Interstate 95 and 695 split (Exit 7A). Interstate 95 provides direct routes to the George Washington Bridge to New Jersey and the Triboro Bridge (Interstate 278) for Manhattan and Brooklyn. The parallel Bruckner Boulevard comes into view beyond the guide sign. Photo taken 08/29/05.
A temporary sign directs motorists onto Interstate 695 southbound for Interstate 295 south. Interstate 295 continues south from the Throgs Neck Bridge to interchanges with the Cross Island Parkway, Interstate 495 (Long Island Expressway), and Grand Central Parkway, all of which provide routes to Long Island, before ending at Hillside Avenue. Exit 7B departs out of view onto the adjacent Bruckner Expressway frontage street ahead of its intersection with Tremont Avenue. Tremont Avenue travels north-south between Westchester and Throgs Neck. Photo taken 08/29/05.
Southbound Interstate 95 on the Cross-Bronx Expressway at the Westchester Avenue over crossing in the Parkchester section of the Bronx. The six-lane freeway passes under Westchester Avenue, the Metro subway line, and Hugh Grant Circle ahead of the Exit 4B off-ramp for Rosedale Avenue and the Bronx River Parkway at West Farms. Photo taken 08/09/04.
A second on-ramp joins Interstate 95 southbound from the adjacent Cross-Bronx Expressway frontage street ahead of the East 174th Street overpass and ramp departure of Exit 4B. Exit 4B consists of a slip ramp onto the adjacent service road ahead of its intersection with Rosedale Avenue. From there the Cross-Bronx Expressway frontage street continues west to a northbound on-ramp for the Bronx River Parkway. The Parkway provides a north-south freeway between Interstate 278 and White Plains via the Sprain Brook Parkway. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Approaching the Bronx River Parkway over crossings 0.75 miles ahead of the Exit 3 off-ramp for Third Avenue. The Cross-Bronx Expressway passes over the Bronx River between here and the northern terminus of Interstate 895 (Sheridan Expressway). However there is no access onto the Sheridan Expressway southbound from Interstate 95 southbound. Drivers should take the Rosedale Avenue off-ramp and remain on the westbound frontage street to East 177th Street to access Interstate 895 south. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Now west of Interstate 895, Interstate 95 (Cross-Bronx Expressway) passes under Prospect Avenue just east of the Third Avenue (Exit 3) off-ramp. Third Avenue serves Crotona Park and the East Tremont, Fordham, and Morrisania neighborhoods of the Bronx. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Tucked away behind a fence at the Crotona Avenue overpass are a pair of U.S. 1 shields on Interstate 95 southbound. The assembly refers to the federal highway routing along Webster Avenue five blocks to the west of Third Avenue. Since there is no direct connection onto U.S. 1 north, motorists are advised to utilize the Exit 3 slip ramp onto East 175th Street, and 175th Street west to its intersection with Webster Avenue. U.S. 1 southbound merges onto Interstate 95 from Webster Avenue ahead to cross the George Washington Bridge into Fort Lee, New Jersey. Photo taken 08/09/04.
The Cross-Bronx Expressway traverses Crotona Park between Arthur and 3rd Avenues in the Bronx. Exit 3 leaves the freeway at the Arthur Avenue overpass for East 175th Street ahead of its junction with Third Avenue. Both Third Avenue and U.S. 1 (Webster Avenue) travel north one mile from Interstate 95 to Fordham Avenue. Photo taken 08/09/04.
