Interstate 95 Northbound Delaware County

Interstate 95 north
Interstate 95 crosses the Delaware state line with six overall lanes into the Township of Lower Chichester. A rest area and Pennsylvania Welcome Center resides just north of the Interstate 95 & 495 merge at the state line. Photo taken 10/03/04.
Northbound sign bridge featuring the two Marcus Hook interchanges of Chichester Avenue (Exit 1) and Pennsylvania 452 / Market Street (Exit 2). Photo taken 04/10/04.
Attached to the Bluebell Avenue overpass is the Exit 1 guide sign for the Chichester Avenue off-ramp. A partial-cloverleaf interchange facilitates the movements between Interstate 95 and the north-south surface street. Chichester Avenue stems northwesterly from Pennsylvania 452 (Market Street) to junction U.S. 322 (Conchester Road). Photo taken 04/10/04.
Pennsylvania 452 (Market Street) intersects Interstate 95 one quarter mile north of the Chichester Avenue interchange. The north-south route begins in Marcus Hook at junction U.S. 13 (10th Street) one mile southeast of Interstate 95. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Traffic interests to U.S. 322 (Conchester Road) westbound to Chadds Ford and West Chester are advised to take Pennsylvania 452 northbound. The reasoning behind that route involves the fact that there is no access to Conchester Road westbound via Interstate 95 at Exit 4. Pennsylvania 452 intersects U.S. 322 0.75 miles north of Exit 2. Photo taken 04/10/04.
In addition to serving the borough of Marcus Hook and U.S. 322 westbound traffic interests, Pennsylvania 452 (Market Street) also serves the communities of Boothwyn and borough of Trainer (pop. 1,854). The junction between Market Street and Interstate 95 is another partial-cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 03/23/04
State-named Interstate 95 northbound reassurance shield posted within the Exit 2 (Pennsylvania 452) interchange. Market Street passes over Interstate 95 ahead. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Interstate 95 next passes through the city of Chester (pop. 36,854). The once thriving port city exists along the Delaware River at the U.S. 322 Commodore Barry Bridge crossing. Unfortunately for the city, its days of prosperity have long since passed and the city is known more for its crime and decay than anything else. Nonetheless four interchanges serve Chester from Interstate 95 northbound. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Exit 3 for Highland Avenue departs Interstate 95 just ahead of its merge with U.S. 322 eastbound at the city of Chester. Highland Avenue passes overhead Interstate 95 & U.S. 322 ahead between Bethel Road and Pennsylvania 291 (2nd Street). The residential thoroughfare is reached by taking the Exit 3 ramp onto Laughead Avenue northbound and Laughead Avenue to Highland Avenue. Photo taken 04/10/04.
U.S. 322 (Conchester Road) eastbound merges onto Interstate 95 ahead of the Highland Avenue overcrossing. The addition of the federal route briefly expands Interstate 95 northbound to four lanes. However the left-hand merge quickly ends and all traffic bound for the Commodore Barry Bridge and Bridgeport, New Jersey must traverse three lanes of travel for the upcoming Exit 4 off-ramp. Photo taken 03/23/04
The northbound on-ramp from Highland Avenue forms the exit-only lane for Exit 4 (U.S. 322 east) and the Commodore Barry Bridge. Opened in 1976, the Commodore Barry Bridge is a cantilever span that links Chester Street via the Flower Street corridor to Bridgeport and Swedesboro, New Jersey. Until the span's opening, U.S. 322 utilized a ferry to cross the Delaware River. Tolls for the eastbound direction of the bridge were removed in 1992. Thus greenouts remain in place over the word "Toll" on all Exit 4 related signage on Interstate 95. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Drawing to within one-eighth of a mile of the U.S. 322 split from Interstate 95 at Exit 4 in Chester. The federal route continues from the Commodore Barry Bridge and Bridgeport, New Jersey to Glassboro and ultimately Atlantic City, New Jersey. Additionally travelers using U.S. 322 can access the New Jersey Turnpike via its Exit 2 interchange. Passing overhead meanwhile is the Engle Street Bridge. Photo taken 04/10/04.
A tri-level interchange handles the movements of U.S. 322 and the Commodore Barry Bridge to/from Interstate 95. The directional ramps however are not fully stacked as the ramps use berms to travel and not full flyover ramps. Until 1992, original guide signs here displayed "U.S. 322 East TO Interstate 295". Those signs were replaced with the reflectorized versions found today. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Glance to the east when crossing the U.S. 322 ramps and a brief view of the Commodore Barry Bridge cantilever span is visible. The ramps below form an unstacked tri-levl interchange. Photo taken 10/03/04.
Traveling through the Exit 4 interchange with U.S. 322 on Interstate 95 northbound. Merging ahead is the northbound on-ramp from U.S. 322 west. Visible beyond the ramp are some of the row homes and public housing projects that line the cityscape of Chester in and near Interstate 95. Exit 5 departs ahead for Kerlin Street and the community of Upland and borough Brookhaven (pop. 7,985). Photo taken 04/10/04.
U.S. 322 westbound traffic entering Interstate 95 forms the exit-only lane for Exit 5 and Kerlin Street. The weaving traffic pattern here exists because of the close proximity of the exits and the overall encroachment of the adjacent residential area. Concord Road parallels Interstate 95 northbound's frontage between U.S. 322 and the Exit 5 off-ramp. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Interstate 95 northbound at the Kerlin Street off-ramp onto West 12th Street in Chester. Kerlin Street passes underneath the freeway one block ahead. From there the north-south avenue travels one third of a mile to its end at Upland Avenue. Upland Avenue serves Upland, Brookhaven via 6th Street, and the Crozer-Chester Medical Center. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Next in line for Interstate 95 northbound motorists is the Exit 6 off-ramp for Pennsylvania 352 (Edgemont Avenue) and Pennsylvania 320 (Avenue of the States & Providence Avenue). The CSX Railroad line closely parallels Interstate 95 from Kerlin Street eastward to junction Interstate 476. Missing from the 0.25-mile overhead is a Pennsylvania 352 shield. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Exit 6 leaves Interstate 95 northbound for East 12th Street and junction Pennsylvania 320 (Avenue of the States). Pennsylvania 352 (Edgemont Avenue) begins just north of the bridge at the Avenue of the States intersection with Providence Avenue. From there Pennsylvania 352 and 320 (Providence Avenue) migrate northward to Parkside (pop. 2,267) and Wallingford respectively. Photo taken 03/23/04.
The right-hand lane becomes an exit-only affair for Interstate 476 (Mid-County Expressway) northbound after the departure of the Exit 6 ramp. Interstate 476 represents an important link between Interstate 95 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike System (Interstates 76-276, and the Northeast Extension) as well as a busy commuter route for the Philadelphia western suburbs. Passing overhead meanwhile is Pennsylvania 320 (Avenue of the States). Photo taken 04/10/04.
Interstate 95 remains below grade through the northern portion of Chester as it nears the southern terminus of Interstate 476 (Exit 7). Known locally as the "Blue Route", Interstate 476 opened to traffic in 1991 between Interstate 95 and Plymouth Meeting (pop. 5,511). However the ramps at Interstate 95 were constructed back in the 1970s. The tri-level stack interchange remained idle for twenty years until the completion of the MacDade Boulevard interchange of the eventual Mid-County Expressway (Exit 1 now). Traffic merges onto Interstate 95 northbound from Chestnut Street below the Melrose Avenue overpass. Unfortunately the close proximity of the on-ramp and Interstate 476 northbound beginning creates a bottleneck during the commuting hours. Photo taken 03/23/04.
The northbound beginning of Interstate 476 departs Interstate 95 at Exit 7. The Blue Route carries four overall lanes between Chester and Pennsylvania 3 (Exit 9) at Broomall (pop. 11,175), and six from there northward. Interstate 476 (Mid-County Expressway) quickly encounters the MacDade Boulevard partial-cloverleaf interchange at Woodlyn (pop. 10,010) otherwise within one mile. The one-lane off-ramp expands to two overall lanes before passing over Interstate 95 northbound. However the bottleneck often bleeds onto Interstate 95 northbound throughout the depressed segment of the freeway in Chester. Out of view below the freeway here is Bullens Lane and the adjacent CSX Railroad line. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Interstate 95 maintains just four lanes through the Interstate 476 tri-level stack interchange. While the capacity may have been sufficient for its construction in the 1970s, the reduction causes slowdowns due to traffic weaving on a daily basis. Pictured here is the Interstate 476 southbound ramp onto Interstate 95 and its Exit 8 guide sign for the upcoming interchange at Ridley Park. U.S. 13 (Chester Pike) passes underneath Interstate 95 ahead. Photo taken 03/23/04.
One-half mile guide sign for the Ridley Park (pop. 7,196) diamond interchange with Stewart Avenue on Interstate 95 northbound. Sound barriers obscure the view as the freeway passes over the Amtrak Northeastern Corridor and SEPTA R2 Regional Rail line adjacent to the Boeing plant. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Exit 8 leaves Interstate 95 northbound for Stewart Avenue. The north-south arterial links U.S. 13 (Chester Pike) and Pennsylvania 291 (Industrial Highway). The connections serve the nearby communities of Eddystone (pop. 2,442), Crum Lynne, Essington, and Folsom (pop. 8,269). Photo taken 03/23/04.
The one-mile overhead for Exits 9A/B (Pennsylvania 420) lies within the Stewart Avenue interchange of Exit 9 on Interstate 95 north. The upcoming full cloverleaf interchange features collector/distributor lanes on both carriageways of Interstate 95. The freeway expands to eight overall lanes between Stewart Avenue and Philadelphia International Airport. Photo taken 03/23/04.
The right-hand lane defaults onto the Exit 9 c/d roadway system for Pennsylvania 420 (Wanamaker Avenue). Wanamaker Avenue carries the state route northward from its beginning at Pennsylvania 291 in Essington to junction U.S. 13 (Chester Pike) at Prospect Park (pop. 6,594). Photo taken 03/23/04.
One half mile west of Exits 9A/B on Interstate 95 north. Pennsylvania 420 (Wanamaker Avenue) stems northward from Essington through the Philadelphia suburbs of Prospect Park, Rutledge (pop. 860), Morton (pop. 2,715), and Springfield (pop. 23,677). The state route ends at Pennsylvania 320 just south of U.S. 1 at the Media Bypass. As Interstate 95 nears Philadelphia International Airport, hotels begin to crop up along its frontage. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Six mainline lanes and two c/d lanes pass through the Exit 9 cloverleaf interchange with Pennsylvania 420. A 3.50-mile overhead for Interstate 76 west (via Pennsylvania 291 north) was installed here in the early 2000s. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Looking at the c/d roadway sign bridge for the Exit 9A off-ramp on Interstate 95 northbound. Exit 9A departs the freeway onto the final 0.20 miles of Pennsylvania 420 (Wanamaker Avenue). The state route ends at Pennsylvania 291 (Industrial Highway) three blocks north of downtown Essington. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Exit 9B leaves Interstate 95 northbound via a loop ramp onto Pennsylvania 420 (Wanamaker Avenue) northbound. The next two interchanges of the freeway serve the Philadelphia International Airport area along the Delaware River at Lester. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Eight lanes progress toward the Exit 10 off-ramp onto Pennsylvania 291 (Industrial Highway). Until 1985, all traffic was diverted from Interstate 95 onto Pennsylvania 291 between here and Enterprise Avenue. The final segment of Interstate 95 to open within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was the stretch near the airport due to the nearby wetlands. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Exit 10 was the original off-ramp to serve the Philadelphia International Airport until the opening of Exit 12. Congestion was a problem along Pennsylvania 291 for airport interests due to a series of traffic lights one would have to traverse to reach the airport terminal. Now that problem no longer exists and Pennsylvania 291 is simply signed for Cargo City of the airport. Bartram Avenue departs Pennsylvania 291 (Industrial Highway) for the Eastwick section of Philadelphia one half mile east of Exit 10. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Auxiliary overhead for Interstate 76 west, University City, and Island Avenue posted on Interstate 95 northbound after the Exit 10 ramp departure. The guide sign should indicate that those points and Interstate 76 west are accessible via Pennsylvania 291 and the George Platte Bridge at Exit 13. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Interstate 95 northbound passes over the CSX Railroad line and Bartram Avenue as it nears the Exit 12 ramp for Philadelphia International Airport. The Philadelphia city and county line exists just east of Bartram Avenue. Photo taken 03/23/04.
