Site Navigation Connecticut Maine Massachusetts New Hampshire New Jersey New York Pennsylvania Rhode Island Vermont     Interstate 95 Interstate 95 follows multiple routes through the state of New Jersey at present. The "gap" created by the unconstructed Interstate 95 between Trenton and South Brunswick relegates the highway to take a convoluted path along the Trenton belt line and New Jersey Turnpike, with trailblazers posted along Interstate 295 and Interstate 195 to make the connection between the two highways. Planning for the route through central New Jersey took unconstructed Interstate 95 on several paths between Trenton and South Brunswick. One of the corridors closely paralleled and used portions of U.S. 1 between Trenton and New Brunswick. Later corridors focused on the stretch between U.S. 206 and U.S. 1 from the Trenton belt line northward to Interstate 287. Other proposals included an unconstructed Interstate 695 to make the connection to Interstate 287 north at Piscataway while Interstate 95 curved east to merge with Interstate 287 at Edison. All of these plans however were cancelled, and the "gap" of Interstate 95 remains today. That left Interstate 95 to follow the New Jersey Turnpike from Interstate 95 northward to Interstate 80 and the George Washington Bridge approach at Teaneck. In the 1990s, Interstate 95 signs appeared on the New Jersey Turnpike south of Interstate 287 through to the Exit 7A interchange with Interstate 195. By 1999, a proposal arose to relocate Interstate 95 onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike Extension between Bristol, Pennsylvania and the New Jersey Turnpike near Bordentown. Signs quickly appeared on that stretch as well. However the relocation of Interstate 95 onto the east-west toll road is contingent on completion of a direct connection between Interstate 95 and Interstate 276 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. That project is in the early stages with an overall completion not expected until 2010. So until that time, Interstate 95 remains on the western half of the Trenton belt line through to the junction with U.S. 1. Interstate 95 trailblazers then guide motorists on Interstate 295 south to Interstate 195 east to its junction with the New Jersey Turnpike. Interstate 95 trailblazers also remain on the New Jersey Turnpike south of Exit 7A (Interstate 195).
