Interstate 95 New Hampshire Turnpike
Interstate 95 stretches just 14 miles through eastern Rockingham County in New Hampshire between Massachusetts and Maine. The highway utilizes the New Hampshire Turnpike or Blue Star Memorial Highway through the Hampton and Portsmouth areas. Built between 1948 and June 24, 1950, the toll road opened between a point near the Massachusetts state line and the Portsmouth Circle with U.S. 1 Bypass. Motorists destined to Massachusetts were directed onto U.S. 1 unto Interstate 95 opened; northward U.S. 1 Bypass carried freeway motorists to Maine across the Maine-New Hampshire Bridge, a lift span over the Piscataqua River.1
Originally consisting of a four-lane toll road, the New Hampshire Turnpike received the designation Interstate 95 by 1960. Increases in traffic follows in the ensuing years and by 1971 expansion to eight lanes began that entailed construction of a new fixed-Piscataqua Bridge directly linking Interstate 95 with the Maine Turnpike. The new bridge opened in 1972 and overall widening was complete by 1976.1
