Interstate 95 - Maine Turnpike

Interstate 95 follows the Maine Turnpike between Exits 3 and 109 and a free highway from the Augusta area north to Houlton and the International Boundary at Houlton. In 2004 Interstate 95 switched alignments between Portland and Gardiner as officials opted to relocate the designation entirely on the Maine Turnpike mainline. That alternation resulted in the decommissioning of existing Interstate 495 on the Maine Turnpike and the extension of pre-existing Interstate 295 from Portland north to Gardiner over the original Interstate 95 alignment. The Falmouth Spur, a tolled connector between the Maine Turnpike mainline and the Portland freeway loop, became unsigned Interstate 495 in the process.

Two Interstate 95 interchanges serve the town of Fairfield in central Maine. They are Exit 133 with U.S. 201 and Exit 132 with Maine 139. Maine 139 travels through Fairfield with Maine 11 & 100 from Benton to the east. Beyond its intersection with U.S. 201 near the town center, Maine 139 ventures westward a short distance to Interstate 95. For much of northern Maine, Interstate 95's carriageways separate by a large grassy or tree lined median. The spacing between the travel lanes allows for sunlight to reach Oakfield Road below as it nears the northbound on-ramp to Houlton. Photo taken 06/27/05.
