Interstate 86 East
Interstate 86/New York 15/17 and Southern Tier Expressway shields on eastbound near Bath. Interstate 86 was brought back to the northeast U.S. in the fall of 1999. The highway is currently signed between the Pennsylvania state line and Horsheads between Exits 52 and 53. East of Elmira, Future Interstate 86 signs are posted along New York 17 in anticipation of the extension of the Interstate to the New York Thruway/Interstate 87 near Harriman. Photo taken 05/29/00.
One of the newest sections of New York 17 was the Corning Bypass. This section of freeway opened in the mid 1990s, and is now part of the new Interstate 86. This photo looks at signage for Exit 45 for New York 352. Photo taken 05/29/00.
Future Interstate 86/New York 17 east at the multiplex with Interstate 81. This photo shows a notoriously dangerous section of highway because of the curvature of the roadway. The segment has been dubbed as "Kamikaze" curve by locals. Upon upgrading to Interstate 86, this substandard portion of freeway will be reconstructed.
