Interstate 84 Eastbound - Hartford Vicinity

Interstate 84 Eastbound
Interstate 84 & U.S. 6-44 leave downtown Hartford via the Bulkeley Bridge across the Connecticut River. U.S. 44 joins the freeway via Exit 50 and departs at the east end of the bridge via Exit 53 into downtown East Hartford. U.S. 6 remains overlapped with the freeway through to Exit 60 in Manchester. U.S. 44 meanwhile follows Connecticut Boulevard and Burnside Avenue to the north of Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 through East Hartford. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Traffic departing via U.S. 44 travels underneath Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 as the freeway turns southeasterly to meet the Connecticut 2 freeway. Connecticut 2 travels east out of downtown Hartford via the Founders Bridge and kisses Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 at a complex interchange with planned Interstate 284. Connecticut 2 comprises a full freeway between the Hartford metropolitan area and Interstate 395 at Norwich. Photo taken 08/09/04.
the westbound mainline of Connecticut 2 and the Interstate 84 off-ramp to the Founders Bridge pass over Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 eastbound at the Exit 55 ramp departure. Connecticut 2 sinks southeast from here to Glastonbury, Marlborough, and Colchester before meeting Interstate 395 at Norwich. Use Interstate 395 south or Connecticut 11 south to reach New London. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Exit 56 to Governor Street in downtown East Hartford departs Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 eastbound underneath the confluence of ramps and the Connecticut 2 westbound mainline. A freeway spur carries traffic northward via Exit 56 to Governor Street just north of U.S. 44 (Connecticut Boulevard). The freeway spur was built as part of the unconstructed Interstate 284 between Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 northward to Interstate 291 at the Captain John Bissell Bridge. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 leave the Interstate 284 and Connecticut 2 stack interchange for the merge with Connecticut 15 and the Wilbur Cross Highway. The freeway nears the partial-cloverleaf interchange with Roberts Street (Exit 58) at the merge with Connecticut 15. An HOV-2 dedicated lane begins ahead and continues eastward to Buckland. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 eastbound elevate over the partial "Y" interchange with Connecticut 15. Connecticut 15 brings travelers from U.S. 5 and Interstate 91 eastward across the Charter Oak Bridge onto Interstate 84 ahead of its split with Interstate 384. Roberts Street ties into the freeway just east of the merge. Photo taken 08/09/04.
The HOV-2 lanes of Interstate 84 pass overhead on their way to the median of the freeway. Exit 58 departs Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 otherwise for Roberts Street midway between its intersections with Silver Lane and Hillside Street. Use Roberts Street south for Rentschler Field, home of UCONN Huskies football, and north for HIllside Street north to Burnside Avenue (U.S. 44). Photo taken 08/09/04.
Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 expand to six overall lanes with the advent of Connecticut 15 traffic on the approach to junction Interstate 384 (Exit 59). A diagrammatical overhead resides at the Simmons Road over crossing just east of Roberts Street (Exit 58). Interstate 384 comprises an 8.20-mile freeway spur east to Manchester Town Center and Bolton. Photo taken 08/09/04.
The carpool lane of Interstate 84 eastbound segregates from the five-lane mainline ahead of the directional split with Interstate 384 (Exit 59). HOV-2 traffic gets their own off-ramp onto Interstate 384 from the left. Interstate 384 otherwise provides the most direct connection between the capital cities of Hartford and Providence, Rhode Island. The freeway ends at U.S. 6 & 44 in Bolton, with U.S. 6 continuing east from there to Willimantic and Danielson. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Eastbound at the Forbes Street over crossing one quarter mile west of the Interstate 84 & 384 split at the Manchester Town line. Interstate 384 represents the original Interstate 84 routing from when the designation was to continue east from Hartford through Willimantic to Providence, Rhode Island. For a period of time during the 1970s and 1980s, Interstate 86 was signed along Interstate 84 between Interstate 384 and the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90). Interstate 84 entailed all of Interstate 384 and the U.S. 6 Willimantic bypass. However when plans for the freeway connections between Manchester and Rhode Island were abandoned, Interstate 84 returned to the Wilbur Cross Highway northeast to Massachusetts. Interstate 86 was decommissioned and Interstate 384 was commissioned in 1984. Photo taken 08/09/04.
The split of Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 and Interstate 384 eastbound at Exit 59. Interstate 384 serves the Manchester Town Center via interchanges with Spencer Street, Keeney Street, Connecticut 83 (Main Street), and Spring Street. A flyover ramp carries HOV-2 traffic onto Interstate 384 ahead as well. Photo taken 08/09/04.
The carpool lane partitions into ramps for Interstate 84 & 384 east as the Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 mainline passes over the Interstate 384 ramps onto westbound. Ahead is the Exit 60 partial-cloverleaf interchange with U.S. 44 (Burnside Avenue) and the departure of U.S. 6 east onto U.S. 44 east (Middle Turnpike). The eastern terminus of Interstate 291 (Exit 61) lies 1.50 miles ahead. Photo taken 08/09/04.
Interstate 84 & U.S. 6 east cross the Manchester Town line one quarter mile out from the Exit 60 off-ramp to U.S. 44 (Middle Turnpike). U.S. 6 & 44 share pavement along Center Street through the Manchester Town Center. The pair split at Interstate 384's eastern terminus at Bolton Notch. U.S. 44 continues east from there to Ashford. Photo taken 08/09/04.

Exit 60 carries U.S. 6 eastbound away from Interstate 84 at U.S. 44 (Middle Turnpike West). Interstate 84 continues northeast to meet Interstate 291 (Exit 61) in one half mile. A left-lane restriction for commercial trucks remains in effect for the freeway. Photo taken 08/09/04.
U.S. 44 (Middle Turnpike West) crosses over Interstate 84 at the Exit 61 ramp departure for Interstate 291 east. Interstate 291 constitutes a northeasterly bypass of Hartford for traffic between Interstates 84 and 91. The freeway crosses the Captain John Bissell Bridge between South Windsor and Windsor before ending at junction Interstate 91 and Connecticut 218 (Putnam Highway). Interstate 291 originally was to continue west from Windsor to Farmington and south to Rocky Hill as a western beltway of the Hartford metropolitan area. Photo taken 08/09/04.
