Interstate 83 South

Exit 50A loops onto U.S. 22 (Jonestown Road) eastbound for Colonial Park and Paxtonia. Jonestown Road constitutes a four-lane surface boulevard that carries U.S. 22 east from Interstate 83 to Paxtonia and Allentown Boulevard. U.S. 322 eastbound departs Interstate 83 southbound via Exit 47 onto Eisenhower Boulevard. Eisenhower Boulevard parallels the southbound side of Interstate 83 between Derry Street and Paxton Street. Exit 43 leaves Interstate 83 southbound for 2nd Street northbound into downtown Harrisburg. 2nd Street and its companion Front Street provide the main surface street routing to the Pennsylvania state capital from Interstate 83. Interstate 83 turns from an east-west orientation to that of a north-south one south of Exit 41A. A left-exit composes the Exit 41A ramp departure for Pennsylvania 581 (Harrisburg Expressway) westbound. The Harrisburg Expressway interchanges with U.S. 11 & 15 at Camp Hill (Exit 5). There U.S. 15 begins its southwesterly trek toward Gettysburg and Frederick, Maryland. U.S. 11 southbound merges onto Pennsylvania 581 between Exits 5 and 3. Interstate 83 southbound at the Exit 39B trumpet interchange with the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76). The Harrisburg West Shore Interchange joins Interstate 76 midway between its exits with Interstate 283 (Harrisburg East) and U.S. 15 (Gettysburg Pike). Interstate 83 southbound sees three interchanges for the city of York. They are as follows: Exit 22 with Business Loop Interstate 83 & Pennsylvania 181 (N. George Street), Exit 19 with Pennsylvania 462 (Market Street), and Exit 18 with Pennsylvania 124 (Mt. Rose Avenue). Exit 21 with U.S. 30 (Arsenal Road) serves the eastbound direction only. Traffic interests to U.S. 30 (Arsenal Road) westbound to Gettysburg should use Exit 22 onto Business Loop Interstate 83 & Pennsylvania 181 (N. George Street) southbound. N. George Street intersects Arsenal Road just west of the Exit 21 interchange with U.S. 30. There is no direct access onto U.S. 30 west from Interstate 83 southbound. Photo taken 10/13/04.

A second look at the Exit 22 sign bridge with mileage based exit numbers. Business Loop Interstate 83 is the only such business route for an Interstate within the state of Pennsylvania. The highway is well signed on the George Street alignment through the city of York. Exit 21 departs Interstate 83 southbound for U.S. 30 east to Lancaster in one half mile otherwise.
