Interstate 78 partitions into a Local / Express configuration at the New Jersey 24 interchange at Springfield in anticipation of the Union and Newark stretch. Newark is the largest city within the state of New Jersey and the influx of traffic from the New Jersey 24 freeway brings in a significant amount of commuter traffic to both Newark and New York City. Therefore like Interstate 80, Interstate 78 widens into a four-carriageway freeway with express traffic using the inside lanes. Photo taken 08/11/04. Traffic to the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 78) and Holland Tunnel into New York City are advised to use the Interstate 78 Express lanes through Union and Newark. The interchange with the Garden State Parkway lies four miles ahead in Union and thus traffic for the north-south tollway should use the Local lanes on the right. There are multiple crossovers between the two carriageways between here and there however, so it is not detrimental to remain on the Express Lanes for the Parkway at first. Photo taken 08/11/04. Interstate 78 initially breaks into two two-lane carriageways at the Express / Local split. However the freeway varies between ten and 14 lanes on the stretch through Union and Newark. The dual freeway configuration ends at the Interstate 78 junction with the New Jersey Turnpike. Interstate 78 Express and Local eastbound at the Orchard Street / Shunpike Road over crossing ahead of Exit 48 with New Jersey 24. New Jersey 24 provides a freeway connection between Interstate 78 at Springfield with Interstate 287 at Morristown to the northwest. New Jersey 124 (Springfield Avenue) parallels both the New Jersey 24 freeway and Interstate 78 between Morristown, Springfield, and Union. The state highway crosses over Interstate 78 after its interchange with the east end of New Jersey 24 via Morris Avenue. At Springfield Avenue, New Jersey 124 turns east and New Jersey 82 begins. New Jersey 82 follows Morris Avenue south through downtown Union while New Jersey 124 shits northward toward Irvington. A loop ramp departs Interstate 78 Local ahead via Exit 49A for New Jersey 124 (Springfield Avenue) westbound for New Jersey 82 and Springfield. A second loop ramp facilitates the movement from Interstate 78 east onto Springfield Avenue eastbound for Maplewood and Irvington. The next off-ramp for Interstate 78 Local joins the freeway with the Garden State Parkway at Exit 52. On-ramps bring traffic onto the Local lanes from Liberty Avenue and Union County 630 within the city of Union. The Garden State Parkway represents a busy north-south toll highway between Woodbridge and Perth Amboy to the south and Orange, and Patterson to the north. One of the most complicated interchanges within the state of New Jersey, the Exit 57 & 58A/B junction features ramps onto New Jersey 21 (McCarter Highway) north for Newark, the U.S. 1 & 9 freeway for Elizabeth, Hoboken, and Port Newark, Newark Liberty International Airport, and U.S. 22 west to Hillside. Constructed as part of the New Jersey Turnpike Spur between the Turnpike mainline and the Holland Tunnel, the bridge opened on April 4, 1956 at a cost of $40-million.1 Photos taken 08/09/04. The stretch of Interstate 78 between the New Jersey Turnpike Extension and the Holland Tunnel ranks high on the Interstate oddity list with Breezewood (Interstate 70), Interstate 180 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Interstate 585 in Spartanburg, South Carolina in that it features a stretch of at-grade roadway with traffic signals.
