Hutchinson River Parkway North The Hutchinson River Parkway begins at the north end of the Bronx Whitestone Bridge along Interstate 678. The stretch between the suspension bridge and the Bruckner Interchange is a six to eight-lane freeway open to all vehicles. North of Interstate 95, the parkway prohibits commercial trucks and busses. Continuing north toward the Exit 2 off-ramp for Tremont Avenue and Westchester Avenue at the Westchester neighborhood of the east Bronx. Northbound at the Exit 2 ramp departure onto Ericson Place. Ericson Place travels north to intersect Tremont Avenue in one block and from there five blocks north to Westchester Avenue. Traffic interests to the Co-Op City area of northeast Bronx should use Exit 3E onto the Bronx Pelham Parkway east for its connection to Interstate 95 (New England Thruway) north. A full-cloverleaf interchange joins the Hutchinson River Parkway with the Bronx Pelham Parkway at Exits 3E/W. Exit 3E consists of a slip ramp onto the adjacent northbound side frontage road for its connection to Pelham Parkway South and the on-ramp to the Bronx Pelham Parkway east. Bronx Pelham Parkway meets Interstate 95 at a full-cloverleaf interchange just east of the Hutch at Shore Road. Shore Road continues east through Pelham Bay Park to Pelham Manor. The westbound parkway travels through the Baychester and Morris Park areas of east Bronx to its full-cloverleaf interchange with the Bronx River Parkway at U.S. 1 (Fordham Road). Photo taken 06/13/05. The Co-op City high rises dot the skyline between the Hutchinson River Parkway and Interstate 95 along the eastbound side frontage street. Constructed as a middle income housing project, the buildings include 15,000 apartment units in about three dozen high-rises, built upon reclaimed swamp land. The site was once touted as for Curtis Airfield, a post-WWII military installation.2 Photos taken 06/13/05. Many parkways within the state and city of New York feature their own trailblazers such as this Hutchinson River Parkway shield posted north of Interstate 95. Exit 5 serves the Orchard Beach area of Pelham Bay Park via connections east of Bartow Pell Circle. City Island lies east of the park between Eastchester Bay and Long Island Sound. The island was first settled by the Siwanoy Indians and later established as an English settlement in 1685. City Island later became a supply center and shipbuilding center during the 18th and 19th centuries, and a military shipbuilding center during World Wars I and II. The maritime industry continues to flourish on City Island with yachting interests from boat construction to sailing schools. Photo taken 06/26/05. Crossing the Hutchinson River along the parkway northbound between Bartow Avenue and the Exit 5 interchange. Opened in 1941 and reconstructed in 1985, the bridge features a single-leaf bascule draw span 35 feet above the river below. Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway cross paths again near the Bronx / Westchester County line at Exit 6. Following the New England Thruway, Interstate 95 arcs through Co-Op City west of the Hutchinson River from Baychester north to Pelham Manor. The New England Thruway is tolled in the northbound direction between Exits 16 and 17 in New Rochelle. Photo taken 06/13/05. Two ramps exist at the north crossing of Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway. Exit 6 joins the Hutch north with Interstate 95 north and Exit 14 joins Interstate 95 south with the Hutch south. Both highways continue north into Pelham Manor en route to New Rochelle and Connecticut. Next in line for northbound travelers is the partial-cloverleaf interchange with U.S. 1 (Boston Post Road). U.S. 1 departs Bronx, New York nearby for Pelham Manor and New Rochelle. Northbound at the Exit 7 ramp departure for U.S. 1 (Boston Post Road) on the Hutchinson River Parkway. Boston Post Road represents the original route between New York City and Boston, Massachusetts. U.S. 1 was christened along the route in 1926 and remains on its in-city routing throughout Bronx, Pelham Manor, New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye, and Port Chester. Wolfs Lane travels north-south between Colonial Avenue and 5th Avenue in Pelham. Colonial Avenue continues Sanford Boulevard east from Mount Vernon to Kings Highway and New Rochelle. Continuing north along the Mount Vernon and Pelham city line toward the East Lincoln Avenue partial-cloverleaf interchange (Exit 12). Exit 10 represents the southbound off-ramp to East 3rd Street in Mount Vernon. Exit 11 to Sparks Avenue was removed in the 1980s improvement project.1 Photo taken 06/13/05. The CSX Railroad line passes high above the parkway via a stone arch over crossing. A sign proclaims that the Hutchinson River and Parkway are named after Anne M. Hutchinson with the years of her life (1591-1643). Hutchinson pioneered rights of religious freedom during the 17th century in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and later New York. Exit 12 joins the parkway with the parallel 1st Avenue ahead of its intersection with Lincoln Avenue. Next in line for northbound travelers is the Exit 13 connector onto the Cross County Parkway westbound to Yonkers. The Cross County Parkway constitutes an east-west limited-access highway between Exit 15 of the Hutchinson River Parkway and Exit 4 of the Saw Mill Parkway (New York 9A). Photo taken 06/13/05. Traffic interests to both the Sprain Brook Parkway and Interstate 87 (New York Thruway) should use the Cross County Parkway westbound at Exit 13. Exit 13 merges onto the parkway ahead of its interchange with New York 22 (Exit 8). Sprain Brook Parkway travels north along the Bronx River 1.75 miles to the west. A companion ramp dumps traffic onto the Hutch southbound as well. Cross County Parkway ends four miles to the west at Saw Mill Parkway (New York 9A) and Rumsey Road. Eastchester Road ventures east to Webster Avenue and North Avenue in New Rochelle. Quaker Ridge Road stems east from North Avenue nearby to New York 125 (Weaver Street) at the Scarsdale City line. The parkway turns northeast and reduces to four lanes through north New Rochelle. A half-diamond interchange brings additional drivers onto the route from Wilmot Road at Exit 19. Hutchinson Avenue stems east from Weaver Street to Meadow Road near the Quaker Ridge Golf Club. Hutchinson River Parkway enters Saxon Woods Park ahead of the Exit 23S/N three-quarter cloverleaf interchange with Mamaroneck Avenue. The second of two service plazas along the Hutchinson River Parkway resides along the highway between Exits 23 and 25 at White Plains. The facility entails a gas station within the median of the four-lane parkway that was built in the 1930s. The 1980s reconstruction of the parkway through this stretch resulted in the removal of the Exit 24 off-ramp onto West Street.1 Photo taken 06/13/05. New York 127 (North Street) intersects the Hutchinson River Parkway at the Exit 25 diamond interchange. Interstate 287 constitutes the Cross Westchester Expressway from Interstate 87 (New England Thruway) east to Interstate 95 (New England Thruway). The freeway provides the eastern leg of the metropolitan New York bypass with Interstate 287 in northern New Jersey. Northbound at the Exit 26E ramp departure onto Interstate 287 (Cross Westchester Expressway) eastbound for Rye Brook, Port Chester, and Rye. Interstate 287 is maintained by the New York Thruway authority but no tolls are charged. Interstates 87 & 287 cross the Tappen Zee Bridge between Tarrytown and Nyack. The two highways part ways at Suffern. There Interstate 287 travels southwest to Oakland, Morristown, and Somerville, New Jersey. Interstate 87 and the New York Thruway continue north to Newburgh, Kingston, and Albany. The freeway was originally touted as Interstate 87 before that designated was applied to the New York Thruway across the Tappen Zee Bridge. Interstate 684 otherwise represents a high-speed connection between the Cross Westchester Expressway and Interstate 84 at Brewster. Interstate 84 stays north of the New York metro area between Newburgh and Danbury, Connecticut. The Hutchinson River Parkway meanwhile turns east to meet New York 120 (Purchase Street) at the Exit 27 diamond interchange.
